Dear Goats, We See You
In my typical morning ritual of scrolling through Twitter, I saw an unusual usual tweet from a handle that I believe is ‘Pro Nigeria’. The tweet? A passionate call for the demolition of Banex Plaza. Yes, you read that right. They want to flatten a plaza that’s home to over 100 businesses and directly and indirectly supports over 1,000 jobs. Because, you know, nothing says patriotism like a good old-fashioned support for the service of the Army to the nation.
Now, I get it. There’s a patriotic angle here somewhere, but it’s buried under a heap of tribal nonsense that’s more common on Twitter Nigeria than actual sense. So, let me break down the backstory for you: some group of soldiers were beaten in the Plaza by some angry mobs after an altercation on matters relating to the purchase of a mobile phone, the Army’s response was to shut down the entire plaza. Because, clearly, the best way to handle a phone dispute is to halt all economic activity for three days.
As expected, Nigerians have continued to condemn the activities of the mobs, people are also questioning the Army’s decision to lay siege to the plaza. Why is the presidency silent? Why cripple economic activity at a time when we need every sector firing on all cylinders?
The goats on social media have turned it into a hammer-and-nail debate, while others have brought out their inner tribal sentiment in addressing the issue. One particularly vocal goat called for the demolition of the plaza, earning cheers from his herd. Other goats are eagerly waiting for the Army to go full military on the situation, punishing everyone who dared to do business there.
I hope the Nigerian Army listens to the voice of wisdom and settles the issue diplomatically. Don’t listen to the bleating of social media goats who seem to think the solution to everything is destruction and chaos.
As for the goats disguised as ‘Patriotic Nigerians’ and ‘Progressive’ we see you and just like a fan, the injustice you wish upon others will come back to whack you in the face.
